Event information
Registrations for this event are closed.
Weather permitting, we are seeking to put together a dive team of up to nine divers to Gotham and CementCo or Flinders Reef with our Boat Handlers Captain Justin and Trevor.
You will need to be comfortable with diving from a small boat in potentially rough conditions, in current and can tow/deploy an SMB from depth. The dive day is long starting at 6:00 am at the Unidive shed to load the boat and finish around 6:00 pm.
Please note you need to be experienced + diver for this trip (30+ dives, 10+ sites with Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent) and dived in the last 6 months) also experience in moderate to strong current, deploy DSMB at depth, safety stop at 5 metres possibly in current and low visibility.
Gotham can have strong current and is in open water with not protection from waves and weather. The site is deep, divers can stay above 30 metres to enjoy the site. Nitrox is a good option for this site.
Meeting early at 06:00 and likely to not be finished until 17:00 or once the boat is locked up.
This trip is organised by volunteers and each team member is expected to assist with the day's operation.
The cost will be around $100. A trip meeting will be organised at the shed 6:30 pm on Thu 20th September. No gear is provided and gear hire is the responsibility of each diver except weights and Tanks which will be loaded that day.
If this is of interest, then check the Event waiver, sign up for the adventure. We will review and notify the dive team on Tuesday 18th September. The event numbers have been set to no more than nine (max divers), so we can review the dive team’s history and have a couple of "reserve divers" if someone cancels. If you miss out, don't worry as there will be more opportunities over the winter to get to Flinders reef and beyond. 😊
Gotham City is north of Moreton Island and is a a spectacular dive sites in Queensland. Featuring a giant granite rock 15 metres tall, 40 metres long and 25 metres wide, with sheer cliffs off all edges. It comes up along a steep wall out of the sandy base at 37 metres, the top of the wall is at around 26 metres and the top of the rock is 22 metres deep. Many divers compare the sight to a small version of the famous Uluru (or Ayers Rock). The rock is decorated with corals, including black coral trees and sea whips, and is a great place to see spotted eagle rays and wobbegong sharks. Snapper, batfish, gropers and barracuda are also regular visitors to Gotham City. Our second dive will most likely be shallower on the famous Flinders Reef.
The Cementco was a 67 metre long hopper barge that worked in Brisbane’s Moreton Bay for many years transporting fossilised coral to be used in cement production. In 1985 the retired ship was to be scuttled off Moreton Island as an artificial reef when it prematurely sank in rough weather, landing on the sea floor upside down in 25 metres of water. Today Cementco is a popular wreck dive. The shipwreck is sparsely covered in corals and home to reef fish, invertebrate species and also the odd groper. Pelagic fish often cruise around the wreck, including trevally, batfish, mackerel and barracuda.
Flinders-Reef is a small isolated reef north of Moreton Island. It has the highest number of coral species of any subtropical reef system along Australia's east coast. With thousands of species of tropical fish, an array of hard and soft corals, eagle rays, leopard sharks in summer, grey nurse sharks and humpback whales in winter, and the famous Turtle Cleaning Station in only 5m of water it is one of Queensland's most popular open water level dive sites.
