Hi everyone!
I am organizing a charter diving trip to 9 Mile Reef on October 12th with Tweed Sea Sports.
9 Mile Reef diving with Tweed Sea Sports
About the dive site
"Nine Mile Reef, off Tweed Heads, has a reputation among locals as being a “sharky” spot (last month I was there and 30-40 grey nurses were around). All year long, a good population of wobbegongs call the reef home, but are joined by leopard sharks in summer and grey nurse sharks in winter. But other shark species drop in from time to time, including bull sharks, bronze whalers and even the occasional hammerhead. The top of the reef sits at about 10 metres deep, dropping to 30 metres with the drop-off covered in numerous hard and soft corals. Reef fish are scattered across the shallower parts, with pelagic fish, sharks, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays and the occasional manta ray circling the reef."
Cost & Volunteer jobs
The cost will be $105 each if the boat is full exc. gear hire (but incl. tanks and weights). You will be asked to pay in advanced and if you cancel your participation, you will be responsible for finding a replacement.
There will be also some contribution to carpooling and snacks ($10-20, depending on the racing car and master chef skills, but we try to keep it low).
We have some volunteer jobs to give away to make this day happening including:
- drivers for car pooling (we try to look after the environment and will take as few cars as possible, so if you decide to drive by yourself, you will not get fuel contribution!)
- finances
- snacks/food etc.
Gear Hire
Tanks, weights and a boat are included. I mean, how much more do you need? Okay, you need a lot more.
It is your responsibility to sort out your own gear hire before the day of the dive. We are happy to help, but you will need to ask :-)
You will need your own mask, snorkel, fins and sense of adventure. Unidive does not hire these. We do hire other stuff though! Like wetsuits, hooded vests, BCDs and regs. Check the website for the full list and gear hire costs.
It is a legal requirement that you dive with an SMB/safety sausage and cutting device. Unidive doesn't hire these, but you can buy them at The Shed.
Pre Dive Meeting
Speaking of which, this will be held at The Shed on Thursday, 10 Oct, 6.30pm. If you can't make the pre-dive meeting, please don't sign up to this dive.
Diver Requirements
To participate in this dive you must be:
- An experienced certified diver: your certification is at least equivalent of Advanced Open Water Diver, you have a minimum of 30 dives at 10 different dive sites and you have dived in the last 6 months
- A current Unidive member who passed the swimming test
- Medically fit to dive
- Have your gear sorted (including bringing your own mask, snorkel, and fins, cutting device, safety sausage....)
