Event information

Hi All,

We plan to do a dive at Smith's Rock, or Flinders, near Morton Island. If we feel like it, we can do a second dive at the same spot, or go somewhere else nearby.

There are nine spots on the boat, and you'll need to confirm if you have a spot or are on the reserve list.

Smith Rock is one of the most notorious reefs off Brisbane, as this jagged rocky outcrop has claimed three ships over the years. Located off the eastern side of Moreton Island, Smith Rock is also a wonderful dive site but is often overlooked as it is a tricky site to anchor on.

In depths from 3 metres to 20 metres, divers at Smith Rock can explore caves, gutters and ledges coloured by soft corals, gorgonians, tubastraea corals and hard corals. Painted crayfish are particularly common in the ledges here, which also accommodate banded boxer shrimps, squirrelfish, gropers and slipper crays. Also seen at Smith Rock are moray eels, wobbegongs, brown-banded bamboo sharks, turtles, batfish and a wide range of reef fish.

Each diver must:

  • Be a current Unidive member, medically fit to dive, who passed the swim test.

  • Have an Open water certification or equivalent.
  • Have dived in the last 6 months.
  • Dive within their certification and capability.
  • Ensure that they have all required dive gear (except tanks and weights, which are provided):
    • Please bring your own mask, snorkel and fins, as Unidive does not provide these.
    • If you need to hire other equipment such as BCD, reg and wetsuit, arrange these before the trip (typically at the Unidive shed on Thursday night before the trip).
    • You must dive with an SMB / safety sausage, cutting device and whistle. Note: These items are NOT supplied.
    • Please note, there will be no time to sort out gear hire on the day of the trip.
  • Follow instructions given by the Boat Handlers and the Dive Supervisor.
  • Help out throughout the whole day.
  • Notify the Dive Officer and Trip Organiser of any changes to their personal circumstances as declared in the event registration form.
  • Attend the trip meeting (usually on the Thursday beforehand at 6:30 pm at the Unidive shed).

If you have any questions about the trip, please email dive@unidive.org.
