We are honoured to help you start your underwater journey.
The course layout is as follows:
- ONLINE TRAINING (8-12 hours before course): Start your independent online training at home through the world-class PADI eLearning system. Please note that PADI will not give you access to the eLearning until you have registered for the course.
- ORIENTATION - August 21st 6:00PM-late: Review your online training, try on the scuba gear and learn to assemble your scuba kit.
- POOL DIVES - August 23rd Full day: full day in pool to master all scuba skills you learned during your eLearning and will be later practised in Ocean.
- PACK LOAN GEAR + DIVE BREIFING - August 28th 6:00PM-8:00pm: Be at the club to meet other divers, organise loan gear for the weekend and prepare for your ocean dives. All Unidive events meet at the club shed the Thursday night before the dives so this also gives you a taste of being a fully certified club member.
- OCEAN DIVES - August 30th + 31st: Explore the reef, putting the skills you have learned into practice over the course of 4 training dives. We will also go through gear care, where you will learn how to take care of your diving gear and log your first four dives into your diving logbook.
- CERTIFICATION - Once you have met all the requirements for the course, your instructor will certify you as a PADI Open Water Diver! You can now join us on our social dives and go diving anywhere in the world!
Course Cost: $650
Includes:
- Transport to/from the University of Queensland St Lucia Campus
- 1 year of UniDive membership
- 3-months of gear hire
- All PADI eLearning materials
What you need:
- SCUBA Mask, snorkel and fins (before the orientation session)
- Bathers and towel
- Water bottle and packed lunch/snacks
To secure a spot on this course, you must follow the four steps below.
-
- ATTEND INSTRUCTOR MEET + GREET: Here you will meet your Instructor Andy, and complete a UQ SWIM TEST (400m swim and 2-minute float supervised by a UQ Aquatic Centre Lifeguard) and a PADI SWIM TEST (200m swim and 10 minutes float supervised by Andy.) This is the perfect chance to have all your questions answered. We recommend you bring along your mask, snorkel and fins to confirm they are suitable for scuba diving as some are designed for snorkelling or pool swimming only. You will receive a UQ Swim certificate which must be emailed to memberships@unidive.org.
- PADI MEDICAL FORM: The medical form needs to be filled in and signed and then emailed to training@unidive.org. If you are over 18 years old and answer no to all questions, you only need to sign yourself. If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian. If you answer yes to a question, you need to book to see your doctor and ask them to sign for you. Some medical histories may require a dive medical test with a specialised diving doctor, but most need a general appointment with a GP to discuss the paperwork and sign.
- UNIDIVE MEMBER: Please go to Registration - UniDive: The University of Queensland Underwater Club and press the link at the bottom of the webpage for new members. You will need to enter your details and follow the prompts. Some questions relate to experienced divers in these cases please answer as best as you can (e.g. when asked if you are certified diver, please answer no – for now!). Once you are certified, you will need to go back in and update your details. At step 6, it will ask for payment - DO NOT PAY. The club membership fee is included in your Open Water course total cost. Please ensure to complete all steps of member registration.
- ADDED TO THE GROUP: Lastly, you need to send your UQ Swim test to memberships@unidive.org (step 1) as well as your Medical Form (step 2) and a screenshot of your account profile (step 3) to training@unidive.org. Once you have done this our committee training officer will then add your Unidive account to a Potential OW Student group on the website which will allow you to register for the event. If you try to register and it says you are not in the correct group, it is because this step has not been completed.
Registrations for the event will open 9 AM on Friday the 8th of August (the day after the instructor meet + greet). Only those who have sent all required documents and have been added to the group will be able to register for the event.
