Hey everyone!
We’re heading down to Gold Coast Seaway for a cleaning dive on:
📅 Saturday 15th of August!!!!
-
Meet at the UniDive Shed: 5:15 am
-
Departure: 5:30AM sharp
- Dive format: Single dive (high tide 10 am) followed by social lunch (BYO).
🌊 What to Expect at the Seaway
Gold Coast Seaway is about 1.25 hr S of Brisbane. This is one of the few places in Brisbane area suitable for diving from shore. The dive is very tide dependent due to current. The river water is a good mix between salt and fresh water. Along a wall of boulders at just 10m deep of sheltered water it is a combination of marine and estuarine life.
On this dive we are collaborating with the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Australia on the "Free the Sea" campaign to clean up the ocean. We will be collecting discarded fishing line and rubbish at the Gold Coast Seaway. Each buddy pair group will receive one catch bag for the fishing line collected.
Each diver must:
-
Each diver must:
- Be a current UniDive member, medically fit to dive, and have a valid UQ Swim Test Certificate
- Have dived in the last 6 months
- Have an Open Water (or equivalent) dive certification from a recognised agency
- Have more than 20 logged dives, and be confident in buoyancy.
- Dive within their certification and capability
- The use of diving gloves is strongly encouraged for this dive. If you do not own diving gloves, you will be required to wear gardening gloves, which will be provided.
- Divers must be confident in their ability to maintain appropriate buoyancy control underwater, including during shallow dives.
- Divers will be provided with one diving mesh bag per buddy pair to carry all collected items. Collected debris should only be placed in the provided mesh bag and not in pockets, BCDs, or any other personal gear.
- Ensure that they have all required dive gear, and are familiar with all aspects of it
- Bring their own mask, snorkel, and fins. Dive with an SMB / "safety sausage", cutting device (e.g. knife or scissors) and whistle. Note: These items are NOT supplied (you need to bring your own)
- If you need to hire other equipment such as BCD, reg, wetsuit, it is your responsibility to hire these before the trip (typically at the UniDive shed on Thursday night before the trip). There will be no time to sort out gear hire on the day of the trip.
There's no need to hire tanks and weights, as these are included in the trip and will be loaded from the shed on the day. - Follow instructions given by the Dive Supervisor, and other people in charge (such as the commercial operator/SURFACE WATCH)
- Help out throughout the whole day
- Notify the Trip Organiser and Dive Supervisor asap of any changes to personal circumstances as declared in the event registration form
- Attend the trip meeting (the Thursday beforehand at 6:15 pm at the UniDive shed
Participants are reminded that clean-up dives involve inherent risks, such as contact with sharp objects, entanglement hazards, and changing underwater conditions. Divers are expected to be aware of these risks and take responsibility for their own safety, making informed decisions in line with their skills, experience, and the conditions on the day.
