UniDive Julian Rocks Trip

Please ensure that you read all the trip information before signing up for the trip.

This is a commercial trip to Julian Rocks in Byron Bay with Sundive.

You need to pay for your place on the trip at the time of booking. Until you have paid, you don’t have a place on the trip. The club needs to finalise the booking with the operator a week before the trip. Cancellations will not be possible after the Friday the week before the trip. If you are unable to make the trip after this it is your responsibility to find someone to pay you for your place otherwise the money you have paid will be forfeit.

This is this double dive trip. Nguthungulli (Julian Rocks) is a richly biodiverse dive site just off Byron Bay, where the meeting of warm and cool currents creates ideal conditions for an exceptional range of marine life, including turtles, manta rays, leopard sharks in summer, grey nurse sharks in winter, vibrant corals and more than a thousand fish species. The rocky outcrop has several dive sites and visitor moorings suited to varying experience levels, all within the broader Cape Byron Marine Park.

We will meet at the Sundive shop in Byron Bay at 7:00am for a dive briefing and to organise gear before launching from The Pass. Sundive organises transport between the shop and boat launch location. Please note, the boat launch can be physically demanding as it is a beach launch. If you are unsure about your ability to particpate in the boat launch, please contact the trip organiser. More information on the boat launch is available on the Sundive website. 

The specific dive sites at Julian Rocks will be decided on the day by Sundive staff based on conditions but all sites are Open Water friendly. 

All dives will be guided by Sundive and are suitable to Open Water certification or higher.

Dive gear you will need to bring with you:

• Mask
• Snorkel
• Fins (and boots if appropriate for your fins)
• Surface Marker Bouy (SMB) aka ‘safety sausage’
• Cutting tool and whistle
• Togs/swimmers/bathers/swimming costume
• Wetsuit^*
• BCD^*
• Regulator & computer^*

You will need to attend the trip briefing at the shed the Thursday before the trip at 6:15pm.

If you are able to drive and take passengers, then you are encouraged to carpool and everyone in the car share the fuel costs. Carpooling will be arranged at the trip briefing.

If you need to loan gear from UniDive this must be done on the Thursday night before the trip at 6pm. Importantly, during busy weekends, shore dives and club boat dives are prioritised for gear hire over trips with external commercial operators, as participants on commercial trips can usually hire equipment directly from the operator. If this applies to a particular weekend, the Trip Organiser will advise you in advance. Gear hire will be available at Sundive on thd day for $60 if required.

To go on this trip you must:

• Book through the UniDive website.
• Be a current UniDive member, medically fit to dive, and have a valid UQ Swim Test Certificate.
• Have dived in the last 6 months.
• Have an Open Water (or equivalent) dive certification from a recognised agency.
• Dive within your experience, certification and capability.
• Ensure that you have all the required dive gear and are familiar with all aspects of it.
• Follow instructions from the Trip Organiser and Commercial operator staff.
• Notify the Trip Organiser ASAP of any changes to personal circumstances as declared on the event registration form.
