Unidive Pool Night

Event information

Join us for UniDive Pool Night and make the most of our exclusive after-hours access to the UQ Aquatic Centre!

We have exclusive use of the 50 m pool from 7:00–8:30 pm, allowing members to swim, snorkel, complete their UQ swim test, or practise scuba skills with a buddy.

The centre remains open exclusively for UniDive until 9:00 pm, giving everyone time to clean and return equipment, shower, change, and pack up. Members often head out for dinner together afterwards.

UniDive heavily subsidises Pool Nights to keep scuba practice affordable and accessible. These nights are volunteer-run, so please respect the equipment and venue and help out where you can.

Schedule

  • Approx. 6:30–7:00 pm: Pool gear collection. Weekend events have first priority to gear so the pool gear start time may be delayed.
  • 7:00–8:30 pm: 50 m pool access. The shed is closed during this time so that our voluinteers can also enjoy the pool.
  • 8:30–9:00 pm: Out of pool, Clean and return gear. Aquatic Centre showers and change rooms open.
  • By 9:00 pm: All UniDive loan gear must be cleaned and returned, and everyone must leave the Aquatic Centre with all equipment and personal belongings. The lifeguards lock the centre and leave at 9:00 pm, so please ensure you are ready to leave on time.
  • Please respect our volunteers, lifeguards and venue by sticking to these times.

Registration Required

Everyone attending Pool Night must register through the UniDive website, including members who are only swimming or snorkelling.

Registration is required because:

  • We have exclusive after-hours access to the UQ Aquatic Centre.
  • An accurate attendance manifest is required for emergency management.
  • Registration is required for UQ insurance coverage.

Please ensure your membership details and emergency contact information are up to date.

Ticket Options

šŸŠ Option 1 – No Scuba Gear

1A – Free Swim

No scuba? No problem! Come along to:

  • Swim laps
  • Snorkel
  • Float around
  • Practise freediving
  • Race your friends on inflatables
  • Simply enjoy the pool

1B – UQ Swim Test

Complete your required UQ swim competency assessment:

  • 400 m continuous swim – untimed
  • 2 minutes treading water

The swim test must be supervised by a lifeguard. When you arrive, please go directly to the lifeguard and let them know you need to complete your UQ swim test.

The swim test is required for members of UQ water-based clubs and must be renewed every two years.

Once completed, the lifeguard will give you a certificate. Please take a photo of your certificate and email it to membership@unidive.org so UniDive can update your records.

🤿 Option 2 – Scuba

2A – Bring Your Own Scuba Gear

Choose this option if you do not need to borrow any UniDive equipment.

Bring everything you need, including your:

  • BCD
  • Regulator
  • Cylinder
  • Weights
  • Wetsuit
  • Dive computer
  • Mask, fins and snorkel

Then find your buddy and enjoy a self-directed practice session.

2B – Cylinder + Weight Belt Only | $5

Choose this option if you only need to borrow:

  • Scuba cylinder, including air fill
  • Weight belt

You must bring your own BCD, regulator, dive computer, wetsuit, weights, mask, fins and snorkel.

2C – Current UniDive Loans Subscription | $5

Choose this option if you have already paid for a one-week or three-month UniDive equipment subscription and so only need to pay extra for a scuba cylinder, air fill, and weight belt. Therefore, you are reserving the following Unidive equipment:

  • BCD
  • Regulator
  • Cylinder
  • Weights
  • Wetsuit

Please remember to bring your mask, fins and snorkel.

Pool Night tickets are still limited for members with a loans subscription, as official UniDive events, workshops and weekly loans receive priority for available equipment.

2D – Full UniDive Gear | $15

Borrow UniDive scuba equipment for Pool Night, including:

  • Cylinder and air fill
  • BCD
  • Regulator
  • Weights and weight belt
  • Wetsuit, if required and available

The $15 fee helps cover air fills and equipment maintenance.

You must bring your own mask, fins, snorkel and dive computer.

2E – UniDive Gear Waiting List

If gear becomes available, members on the waiting list will be contacted in registration order.

If last-minute gear becomes available on the night, it will only be offered to registered waiting-list members who are at the pool/shed, again in registration order.

Diving Safety

Although we're in a pool, normal scuba safety procedures still apply.

All scuba divers must:

  • Dive within their training and certification level.
  • Always dive with a buddy.
  • Finish every dive with at least 50 bar remaining.

Need a buddy?

If you don't already have one, you can:

  • Post in the UniDive Facebook group before Pool Night.
  • Join the UniDive WhatsApp Community to find a buddy and discuss what you'd like to practise. Experienced members and Training Volunteers are often happy to provide tips and guidance: https://chat.whatsapp.com/EkgInVyZ6cwCADFfwGWFi6
  • Register for an official UniDive Pool Workshop led by experienced volunteers. These are advertised as separate events.

Members who do not follow the safety requirements may be asked to stop diving, receive a formal warning, and may be excluded from future UniDive events.

Scuba Logistics

Air Fills & Cylinder Transport

Pool Night cylinders are often needed again for UniDive weekend events, so we rely on volunteers to transport them to and from the dive centre for filling on Friday.

If cylinder tickets are sold out but you can help with tank transport on Friday, please email training@unidive.org.

More volunteers may mean we can make more cylinders available for Pool Night.

Scuba Gear Collection & Return

Pool Night equipment can be collected approximately 6:30–7:00 pm, after gear has been allocated to official UniDive events and weekly equipment loans.

Please sign your equipment in and out with the designated Training Volunteer — look for the person with the clipboard and funny hat! This is separate from the Loans Officers at the loans table.

All Pool Night equipment must be:

  • Cleaned after use
  • Returned between 8:30–9:00 pm
  • Signed back in with the Training Volunteer

The shed may be closed from 7:00–8:30 pm so our volunteers can enjoy the pool too

Equipment Availability

UniDive equipment is allocated in the following priority order:

  1. Official UniDive courses, workshops and training events
  2. Approved weekly equipment loans
  3. Pool Night equipment bookings

Pool Night gear tickets are limited based on the equipment expected to be available after higher-priority bookings have been allocated.

As UniDive is entirely volunteer-run, unexpected equipment shortages can occasionally occur. If equipment you've paid to hire is unavailable, your hire fee will be fully refunded.

šŸŽ© Want to Wear the Funny Hat?

We're always looking for Pool Night volunteers — clipboard-ticking skills are the main qualification!

The Training Volunteer supports the Loans Officers, workshop leaders and trip organisers by:

  • Tracking equipment in and out of the pool
  • Making sure gear required for upcoming events remains available
  • Helping coordinate cylinder filling and transport
  • Keeping Pool Night logistics running smoothly

We look forward to seeing you in the pool!
