24hr Dive For the Love of the Reef
Published Fri 26 Oct 2018
Last weekend about 50 Unidivers and many volunteers from ReefCheck, CoralWatch and Virtual Reef Diver participated in a huge awareness raising activity at the UQ Aquatic Centre. We had a 24hr dive: 2 divers each hour for 24 hours, from 9am Saturday to 9am Sunday, played games on the bottom of the UQ pool. We all had a great time - even those who were there in the middle of the night! Someone apparently even did a refresher at about 2 or 3am! We also had a fundraising BBQ, cake stall, underwater rugby demo, and a celebratory BBQ breakfast on Sunday for tall the volunteers.
ReefCheck set up stalls to educate adults and children about coral, fish, reefs and other such things and informed a lot of people about their great citizen science initiatives and the threats posed to reefs. CoralWatch also set up a stall educating everyone about what they do and how easy it is to become a citizen scientist and measure coral health. Virtual Reef Diver showed lots of people what it looks like to swim around a reef - without them actually getting wet! And a highlight of Saturday night was a showing of Lin Sutherland's new documentary called Beauty and the Reef.
We all had a great time, shared lots of information with other people, and we even raised just under $1200 that will be donated to ReefCheck and CoralWatch to help them continue their great work!
