Semester 2 2017 has begun!

Published Fri 28 Jul 2017

Firstly, a huge thankyou to everyone who helped out at Market Day this week - Jan, Jens, Alejandra, Doug... and others I didn't see (sorry) - you guys are amazing! And thankyou to Alex for the barbecue last night and Julie for keeping memberships going while everyone else was having fun!

We've got HEAPS of new members this week and it will take a little while to process everyone's memberships. If you've paid at Market Day and haven't Registered on the website yet, please do so asap - it's easier to match payments to accounts earlier rather than later! If you've Registered but not paid yet, your account won't get activated until after you've paid. Please also note that the approval process is manual - we need to check a few things (like whether to recommend a medical based on your answers, or check you're really a student to get the discount etc). If you're still waiting after a week or so, email membership@unidive.org to ask Patrick what's happening - he may have missed you in the big pile! So yes, you do get a confusing email automatically that has a blank username and password - it's a quirk of the system that hasn't been fixed yet, but you will get real login details once you've been approved.

If you need to do a refresher, look out for email advertisements for the upcoming workshops - the first will be on the 10th August, but we're hoping to find enough workshop leaders to do another one later in the semester too (DMs and instructors - let Mel training@unidive.org know when you're available!).

Be on the lookout for our traditional Tweed River Welcome Dive, which is scheduled for the 26th August - all members are welcome. It's a fun day out, with a shore dive and barbecue beside the river. This trip is especially good for people who've just done a refresher to get out and do a nice easy dive and also for experienced divers who like leading or want to practice leading less experienced divers.

Also, when you're looking at the calendar please note that many trips don't go up until a couple of weeks beforehand, since we're all volunteers and all do things at the last minute (you know, like your assignments...) so don't be put off if it looks like there's not much coming up. And remember that ANY member can organise a dive. You don't have to be an experienced diver because you're really just doing the logistics (booking with a shop, organising carpooling and finances etc) - you delegate the hard stuff to appropriately experienced people ;) So if you want to make a trip happen, let James know dive@unidive.org and he'll help you out with the info you need!

And of course, if you want to try out underwater rugby - don't be shy, give it a go! While we've got a great team that does well at the Nationals etc, don't let that put you off - you dont have to play in competitions, you can just do it for fun and fitness. But if you do decide it's your thing, you can go as far as you want - we've even had players go to the World Championships!
