Straddie Driving Trip

Published Sat 16 Dec 2017

Last weekend twelve of us went diving at North Stradbroke Island with Point Lookout Scuba Dive Charters. Those who attended shared a relaxing weekend with an awesome group of people diving with some of the coolest marine life!

Hitting the water at 8:00 am on Saturday morning the first dive spot of the trip was at Shag Rock. The cosy water temperature of 25°C and high-visibility of 10-15m, made for two highly-enjoyable dives at a max. depth of 15m. Notable marine life that was observed at Shag Rock included leopard sharks, eagle ray, stingrays, anemonefishes, pufferfishes, octopus, and for a lucky few the bizarre
peacock mantis shrimp.

On Sunday morning (10:00 am) we headed out to the much-anticipated dive site, Manta Bommie. Conditions there on Sunday proved to be more favourable than what was witnessed on the previous day and two planned dives went ahead at a max. depth of 12m. Water temperature and visibility was similar to that experienced on Saturday. Everyone encountered majestic manta rays that were effortlessly gliding and hovering, while being attended to by resident cleaner wrasse. Aside from manta rays, other notable marine-life included guitar sharks, numerous leopard sharks, giant cuttlefish, turtles, and various species of nudibranch.

A big thanks to James McPherson who organised the trip, and to our dive operator Ken for his warm hospitality and getting us in-and-out of the water safe and sound.
